Annual progress report on school 2007-2010 Equality Scheme

Progress on actions planned to promote race equality.

• Protocols are in place that deal with the recording of racist incidents. These procedures are accessible to all staff on the global network.
• There is a named teacher who monitors the number of racist incidents.
• Data used in school is analysed on many levels including achievement by ethnic groups.
• Planned activities to raise cultural and ethnic awareness include the first Enrichment Day in November 2008 having the theme of Africa and Asia.
Progress on actions planned to promote disability equality

• Individual support has been provided to parents of disabled children throughout the academic year through regular meetings. Parents have responded positively.
• A dyslexia friendly teaching pack was distributed to all staff to meet the needs of SpLD learners. This was produced following a staff audit of current teaching practice.
• Disability awareness boards are now present in upper and lower school and are updated to reflect current changes relating to SEN. These promote awareness of certain conditions e.g.; Cerebral Palsy or Deaf Awareness Week through posters and information.
• Lift access has been further improved and there is now a hygiene room that caters for those SEN pupils with physical difficulties who require physiotherapy or shower facilities.
• A number of rise and fall desks have been purchased to cater for the needs of wheelchair users in the Science laboratories.
• Resurfacing work has been completed around the school to improve accessibility for those students with mobility problems.
• Ramps have been fitted to the St. Ambrose Barlow Nurture Centre to allow wheelchair access.
Progress on actions to promote gender equality

• The school does not discriminate against learners, job applicants or staff on the grounds of gender or marital status and meets recommendations of relevant codes of practice.
• Communications with parents and stakeholders including letters, newsletters and the school’s prospectus are monitored to promote equality on a gender basis.
